Scolio-Pilates® Education Program
Module I, Professional Seminar:
Your Module I Scolio-Pilates Course is designed to be an experiential approach to understanding scoliosis to enhance learning and advance your teaching skills. Why is the “experience of scoliosis” important? Because three-dimensional correction with Scolio-Pilates is complex. Understanding scoliosis through your own experience,
in addition to cognitively, makes it more comprehensible.
You will be better equipped to make thoughtful decisions about the exercises you apply versus following a complex series of rules and guidelines Welcome to Scolio-Pilates Module I. This course is a building block and lays the foundation for the Scolio-Pilates Module II: The Professional Seminar. You will receive a strong base in the anatomy of scoliosis to help you understand what is happening under the skin that creates the changes we see and experience with scoliosis on the surface and with movement. With this understanding, you will be better equipped to make the best scoliosis specific exercise choices. Topics to be covered include:
-
What is scoliosis? Who it affects and its effects on the systems of the body
-
Experience scoliosis! What it feels like to do Pilates with scoliosis
-
Anatomy of Scoliosis
-
Understanding functional v structural scoliosis
-
Defining the convexities and concavities
-
Theories and laws of movement that apply to scoliosis
-
The first 5 exercises for scoliosis
This course is appropriate for Scoliotic-clients, Pilates Instructors, Physical Therapists, Physiotherapist, medical doctors and nurses.
More Movement, Less Pain.
Module II, Professional Seminar:
Challenge your practice with a Scolio-Pilates Professional Seminar!
Module II builds upon the pre-requisite Module I, Scolio-Pilates Professional Seminar.
We will dive deeper into understanding the anatomy of scoliosis and use that understanding to define the curves of scoliosis (3, 4 and thoraco-lumbar curves). Once we define the curves we can begin to understand how to correct those curves towards neutral. We use scoliosis specific corrections and scoliosis specific exercises to aid us in bringing our clients towards a more balanced system.
The scoliosis specific exercises begin with corrections in the basic positions of prone, supine, side-lying, seated and standing. Once the corrections are applied in the basic positions, we add movement to these corrections either on the mat or with the assistance of the Pilates equipment. Come learn why Scolio-Pilates, a form of Pilates that allows for modifications to assist the client with scoliosis in the Pilates studio, is now being used by children’s hospitals, physical therapy clinics and Pilates studios worldwide to help with the management of scoliosis.
This course is appropriate for Pilates Instructors, Physical Therapists, Physiotherapist, medical doctors and nurses that have done Module 1.

Karena Thek, President
As a result of her work, she was asked to host Pilates for Healthy Bodies on American Public Television where the special aired for 2 years. Simultaneously, she hosted her own radio show on AM1220 KHTS: Alive & Well Radio. In addition, Karena enjoys and has done several guest expert appearances on network television.
In 2017, Karena was asked to bring her Scolio-Pilates program to Dayton Children’s Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. At Dayton Children’s, ScolioPilates is part of the medical treatment plan for eligible patients with scoliosis.
This milestone is the first step in fulfilling the organization’s mission to make three-dimensional exercise a part of all scoliosis medical management programs (traditionally, scoliosis is managed through observation, bracing and surgery). Karena, through the organization and the support of the medical community, is striving to continue work with more hospitals and the medical community to continue to fulfill this mission in a bigger and bigger way.
Karena has been leading the direction of the organization since its inception in 1999. In this time, she has authored three books: ScolioPilates, OsteoPilates and The Pilates Golf Athlete. In addition to the techniques described in detail in her three books, she is also developing NeuroPilates. NeuroPilates is based on her interest in Traumatic Brain Injury and her initial work with the Wounded Warrior Batallion at the San Diego Naval Medical Center in the Comprehensive Combat and Complex Casualty Care Unit (C5 Unit).
Her interest in helping those with complex conditions with exercise management tools was initially fed by her 10 years as the director of Pilates at SCV Therapy Services in Valencia, California. From the therapy center, to her own studio, to the thousands of people Karena meets in her travels, her clients have always been her teachers.

Karena’s Goal: “To ensure that everyone living with scoliosis knows that there is a lot of hope.
You can Really Live with scoliosis.”
John Herbert, Chief Of Operations
Karena and John met in August of 2012 where John brought more than 25-years of project management, engineering, and business management experience to the organization. John’s extensive skills enable Karena to teach her workshops all over the world and continue her study/work with clients, all while growing her world-wide team of Authorized Scolio-Pilates Practitioners.
John’s goal: “To enable our organization and Karena to serve all our clients to the best of our abilities and ensure they live the fullest life possible.”
